Ajanta Caves are one of the well renowned places to visit. Ajanta Caves are declared "World Heritage Site" by UNESCO. Ajanta caves are situated at Jalgaon, which is 107 kilometers from Aurangabad City.

There are 29 caves (official numbered by the Archaeological Survey of India). These caves were discovered in AD 1819 by few British Army officers. All paintings of Ajanta show heavy religious influence centre around Buddha, Bodhisattvas, incidents from the life of Buddha & the Jatakas.
The paintings are executed on a ground of mud-plaster in the tempera technique. The paintings on the walls, illustrate the events in the life of Prince Gautama Buddha, the founder of Buddhism and in the more popular Jatakas stories pertaining to Buddha's previous life. Some pictures recall the Greek & Roman compositions and proportions, few late resemble to Chinese manners to some extent. But majority belongs to a phase, which is purely Indian, as they are found nowhere else.
These monuments were constructed during two different periods of time separated by a long interval of four centuries. The older ones were the product of last to centuries before Christ and belong to Hinayana period of Buddhism in later part of 2nd century AD when Buddhism was divided into two sections, after the conduct of the fourth general council under another great king, Kanishka.
There are two kinds of Caves:
Finished Caves: They are Twenty Seven & depict different forms of Buddha. They are Cave s 1, 2, 4, 6, 7, 9 and 10.
Unfinished Caves: They are unfinished & some of them are accessible. They are Caves 3, 5, 8, 23, 24, 25, 28 and 29.

Getting Around Ajanta
Ready to walk a lot before you start because no matter you drive a car or
take the bus to Ajanta, you will get off a couple of kms from the caves. The
only way to get to the caves is by one of the shuttle buses and to roam around
the caves you have to walk!
Ajanta Caves: Best Time to Visit
Best time to visit Ajanta Caves is during the months of October to February (winter season) and from June to September
(monsoon season), these are the best time to visit Ajanta Caves, as the weather
is really pleasant during these months.
Although March, April and May are holiday season (most of the school & colleges
are shut downs during these months) in India, but the temperature is really high
during these months i.e. between 37 °C to 44 °C making the weather really hot
and humid making it difficult to travel around the caves.
